When Nigerian banker Jim Ovia reflects on the start of Zenith Bank, the numbers are remarkable.

In 1990, he invested N20 million, about $5 million at the time, to launch a bank in a crowded market. Today, that investment has blossomed into Nigeria’s most profitable bank, with shareholders’ funds exceeding $3.3 billion as of September 2025.

Now 74, Ovia attributes this incredible growth not to rapid scaling, but to a philosophy of “quiet, patient capital.”

He emphasizes that such astronomical returns are rare in established markets like the US or Europe but are possible in Nigeria for those who remain focused and determined through challenges.

His journey from a bank clerk to a leading businessman with an estimated net worth of $980 million is a testament to this belief.

Under Ovia’s leadership as chairman, Zenith Bank has become a financial titan through conservative lending and tight cost controls.

The bank has expanded beyond Nigeria, with a presence in the UK and Paris, and is now setting its sights on further African expansion into Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, and Kenya, following a successful capital raise.

This story isn’t just about the numbers; for Ovia, it’s about the perseverance and long-term vision that turned a modest startup into a continental powerhouse.
