WhatsApp has surpassed 3 billion monthly active users, strengthening its position as the world’s largest messaging platform and highlighting its transformation from a consumer messaging app into one of Meta’s fastest-growing business platforms.

The milestone, disclosed by Meta during its first-quarter 2025 earnings call, comes as the company increasingly monetizes WhatsApp through business messaging, payments, and artificial intelligence (AI)-powered customer engagement rather than traditional advertising.

Meta’s commercial strategy is gaining traction. The company said WhatsApp’s paid business messaging reached a $2 billion annual revenue run rate by late 2025, reflecting strong adoption of the WhatsApp Business Platform by enterprises worldwide. Industry estimates also project business messaging revenue to continue rising as more companies shift customer support, marketing, and authentication services to conversational platforms.

Unlike Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp remains largely ad-free for consumers. Instead, Meta generates revenue by charging businesses to send template messages through the WhatsApp Business Platform, including marketing campaigns, order updates, appointment reminders, and one-time authentication codes. The model has positioned WhatsApp as a scalable enterprise communications platform while preserving the app’s core user experience.

The platform’s appeal lies in its exceptionally high engagement. Industry research estimates WhatsApp Business messages achieve open rates of more than 90%, significantly outperforming email marketing, where open rates typically range between 20% and 30%. With well over 100 billion messages exchanged daily, WhatsApp has become a primary communication channel for businesses across Asia, Latin America, Africa, and parts of Europe.

India remains WhatsApp’s largest market, with more than 500 million monthly users, making it a key driver of Meta’s business messaging expansion. Brazil, Indonesia, and Mexico also rank among the platform’s largest and fastest-growing markets.

Nigeria has emerged as one of Africa’s most active WhatsApp economies. With an estimated more than 50 million users, the platform has become an essential tool for small businesses, banks, retailers, and digital service providers. Major financial institutions, including First Bank of Nigeria, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank), and United Bank for Africa (UBA), use WhatsApp Business to provide customer support and banking services, while thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises rely on the platform for sales, customer engagement, and order management.

Research by Public First found that millions of Nigerian businesses use Meta’s family of apps, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram, to reach customers, contributing significantly to business growth and digital commerce.

Looking ahead, Meta is integrating its AI assistant across WhatsApp to enable automated customer service, personalized shopping assistance, and conversational commerce. As businesses increasingly adopt AI-driven messaging, analysts believe WhatsApp is well positioned to become one of Meta’s most valuable long-term assets, combining unmatched global reach with a rapidly expanding enterprise software business.
