Showmax Introduces Local Payment Options to Simplify Subscriptions for Nigerians

Showmax, one of Africa’s leading streaming platforms, has taken a big step to make it much easier for people in Nigeria to subscribe to its service. Through a new partnership with Baxi by Onafriq, Nigerian users now have multiple simple and convenient ways to pay for their Showmax plans without the usual hassles of international card payments or complex setups.

For many Nigerians, accessing global digital services has often been challenging because traditional payment methods like foreign debit/credit cards are hard to use, expensive, or sometimes completely unavailable for online subscription services. This has limited the ability of people to sign up for entertainment platforms and accelerated the rise of informal workarounds. Now, with Showmax’s collaboration with Baxi, users are given payment flexibility that fits better with local financial systems and habits.

Under the new arrangement, Showmax customers in Nigeria can use the Baxi by Onafriq app to log in and select their preferred Showmax plan, whether it’s mobile-only or includes streaming across all devices. Payment can be completed entirely within the Baxi app, eliminating the need for complicated third-party transactions or international card processing issues. This makes subscribing faster and more straightforward for users who may be new to digital payments or hesitant to use international financial services.

In addition to paying through the Baxi app, subscribers who have a verified mobile number can also top up their Baxi wallets via the app itself or at physical Baxi POS agent points. Once funds are loaded, those balances can be used directly to cover Showmax subscription fees. This method brings subscription billing closer to everyday financial activities, much like topping up airtime or data credit.

This update wasn’t just made for convenience, it was designed with both accessibility and security in mind. In a statement announcing the new process, Showmax’s Head of Marketing for West Africa, Tope Oshunkeye, said that the partnership “is a significant step forward in our mission to deliver world-class streaming experiences” and that making payments “quickly and securely” through a trusted financial provider is central to that mission.

Onafriq’s Managing Director for Anglophone West Africa, Mxolisi Msutwana, also highlighted how the collaboration seeks to make entertainment access smoother, noting that automating renewals as part of the service can improve convenience and help boost digital payment adoption.

Across Nigeria’s digital economy, simpler payment options for entertainment subscriptions like Showmax can have wider effects. For many households, entertainment services are part of monthly spending tied to data plans, airtime, and digital utilities, expenditures that compete with essential costs like food, education, and transport. The easier it is to pay for these digital services locally (especially in naira), the more balanced household budgets can be. At the same time, easier local payments also help reduce dependence on foreign cards and lower foreign exchange outflows tied to international subscription billing.

Before this enhancement, many Nigerians struggled with streaming platform payments due to limited access to international bank cards or mobile wallets that are widely accepted abroad. This often forced them into cumbersome processes, including prepaid vouchers, third-party agents, or relying on foreign cards. With Baxi integrated directly into Showmax’s payment process, the hope is that more people will be able to subscribe easily without needing complex workarounds.

The move also reflects wider trends in Nigeria’s payments space. Local fintech platforms and digital banks have been pushing innovative solutions that let people pay for services in naira, which is especially important given ongoing currency pressures and foreign exchange volatility in the economy. These solutions are helping bridge the gap between global digital services and local consumer realities.

For current Showmax users, these changes mean less friction when renewing or upgrading their plans. For potential subscribers previously deterred by payment barriers, this new system offers a more approachable path into the Showmax ecosystem. By making payments simpler, Showmax is positioning itself to grow its audience and engagement in one of Africa’s most dynamic digital markets.
