Sahara Group has unveiled a new $50,000 innovation programme aimed at accelerating Africa’s energy transition and encouraging researchers to develop practical solutions for the continent’s growing energy needs.

The initiative, known as the Asharami M.A.D Equation: Solving for Sahara Beyond XXX, seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and real-world industry application. The programme is designed to help innovative ideas move beyond research papers and become scalable solutions capable of improving energy access, strengthening infrastructure, and supporting sustainable development across Africa.

One of the major challenges facing Africa’s innovation ecosystem is that many valuable research projects remain within academic circles and never reach the implementation stage. Sahara Group believes that by connecting researchers directly with challenges facing the energy industry, these ideas can be transformed into solutions that create measurable impact.

Speaking on the initiative, Sahara Group’s Director of Governance and Sustainability, Ejiro Gray, said Africa’s energy future depends largely on its ability to convert knowledge and research into practical action. According to her, the programme was specifically created to unlock the vast potential within Africa’s academic and research communities.

Gray explained that the Asharami M.A.D Equation will provide a platform for emerging innovators and researchers to develop solutions that improve energy reliability, expand electricity access, and contribute to sustainability goals across the continent.

She noted that the competition is open to innovators from across Africa, particularly postgraduate students and advanced researchers. Participants are encouraged to submit ideas that demonstrate strong analytical thinking, practical relevance, scalability, and alignment with Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles.

Sahara Group’s Head of Corporate Communications, Bethel Obioma, described the initiative as more than just a funding programme. He said it represents a strategic investment in African talent and creativity.

According to Obioma, the company aims to empower researchers and innovators to turn their ideas into practical solutions capable of strengthening energy systems, improving living conditions, and promoting inclusive economic growth throughout the continent.

To encourage participation, Sahara Group has set aside a total prize fund of $50,000. The overall winner will receive $25,000, while the second and third-place winners will receive $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.

In addition to financial rewards, successful participants will gain access to mentorship opportunities, technical support, and the possibility of implementing their innovations within Sahara Group’s operations. This provides a unique opportunity for researchers to test and scale their ideas in real industry environments.

The programme will focus on solving key challenges within Africa’s oil, gas, and power sectors. Areas of interest include the digitalisation of upstream operations, predictive maintenance technologies, improved power reliability, and grid optimisation.

By supporting innovative solutions in these critical sectors, Sahara Group hopes to contribute to stronger and more resilient energy systems while helping Africa achieve long-term sustainable growth and greater energy access for its growing population.
