OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Atlas: A Next-Gen AI Browser to Challenge Google

OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a web browser powered by artificial intelligence that aims to change how we browse and challenge dominant players in the market like Google. The browser was launched on October 21, 2025, initially for MacOS users.

Atlas is designed around ChatGPT, putting the conversational AI at the heart of the browsing experience. It does away with a traditional address bar and instead lets users interact with ChatGPT as they browse, offering “a browser built with ChatGPT” that delivers a “super-assistant” feel. Users can stay in one interface—no toggling between tabs, copying, or pasting—as ChatGPT provides contextual help on whatever site you’re on.

In addition, a paid agent mode is available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users. This mode lets ChatGPT run searches, analyze data, and automate tasks based on your browsing context. “As you use Atlas, ChatGPT can get smarter and more helpful, too. Browser memories let ChatGPT remember context from the sites you visit and bring that context back when you need it,” OpenAI explains. Users have control over this memory feature, including opting out or deleting stored data.

Atlas is available worldwide for MacOS across all user plans—Free, Plus, Pro, and Go—and is also in beta for Business, Enterprise, and Education users. OpenAI plans to extend support to Windows, iOS, and Android soon. Launching Atlas is as simple as signing in to ChatGPT on first use and importing your bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from your existing browser.

Atlas enters a competitive space already reshaped by AI-based search and interaction. Google has reacted by rolling out AI features like its AI Mode and incorporating its Gemini AI into Chrome for U.S. users. Yet, Chrome still commands about 71.9% of the global browser market share as of September 2025.

According to analyst Gil Luria, “Integrating chat into a browser is a precursor for OpenAI starting to sell ads, … Once OpenAI starts selling ads … that could take away a significant part of search advertising share from Google…”

Atlas marks a bold step in OpenAI’s push to monetize AI tools and compete in both browsing and search. At its recent DevDay, OpenAI revealed ChatGPT now has around 800 million weekly users.  To support growth, the company has made major moves—including acquiring AI tooling firms, striking massive cloud computing deals, and expanding its infrastructure—all to strengthen its position in the evolving AI landscape.
