NiMet Predicts Dust, Haze and Rainfall Across Nigeria: What It Means for Agriculture, Health and the Economy

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a three-day weather forecast warning of varying weather conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday. According to the agency, slight dust haze will dominate the northern states, while moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in central and southern parts of Nigeria.

NiMet’s forecast, issued on Sunday, highlights that locally flash floods may occur in flood-prone areas, urging residents to remain cautious. The agency also advised people with respiratory conditions to limit outdoor exposure due to dust particles suspended in the atmosphere over the northern parts of the country.

In its regional breakdown, NiMet predicted that Northern states such as Borno, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Yobe, and northern Kaduna will experience slight dust haze with good visibility from Monday through Tuesday. For the central region, including Nasarawa, Kogi, and the Federal Capital Territory, the weather is expected to start with sunny skies and scattered clouds before giving way to isolated thunderstorms and light rain later in the day.

Southern states like Lagos, Rivers, Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Edo are expected to begin the week with cloudy skies and light showers. By afternoon, heavier thunderstorms are forecasted to develop, especially in coastal and inland areas. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the north will continue to experience dry and hazy conditions, while central regions will alternate between sunshine and rainfall. Southern states are expected to record more intense and widespread thunderstorms, particularly on Wednesday afternoon.

NiMet also advised airline operators to regularly consult airport-specific weather reports for flight planning, stressing that weather conditions could affect flight schedules and visibility across various regions.

Beyond the weather forecast, the outlook carries important economic implications. In the agricultural sector, the expected rainfall in the southern and central regions could benefit crops like maize, yam, cassava, and vegetables, especially in areas suffering from dry spells. However, excessive rainfall and flash floods could destroy seedlings and reduce yields, especially in flood-prone farmlands.

Transport and logistics could also be disrupted as flooding and muddy roads may hinder the movement of farm produce, potentially leading to higher food prices. Such disruptions could worsen Nigeria’s food inflation, which remains one of the main drivers of the country’s double-digit inflation rate.

In the Northern parts of the country, the dust haze poses health challenges, especially for people with asthma or respiratory ailments. Increased hospital visits and reduced productivity could further strain public health systems and economic output.

Experts note that weather volatility is also increasing pressure on Nigeria’s insurance and agricultural sectors. The unpredictable pattern raises risks for farmers, insurers, and logistics companies, with the potential to push up insurance premiums and operational costs.

NiMet’s forecast thus goes beyond meteorology. It highlights the interconnectedness of weather, agriculture, health, and the economy. As Nigeria braces for this mix of dust, haze, and rainfall, the effects will likely ripple across sectors, influencing food prices, productivity, and overall economic stability.
