President Bola Tinubu has reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with the United Kingdom, stressing cooperation on security, economic growth, and shared democratic principles.
Speaking at a State Banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle during his ongoing state visit, Tinubu described the engagement as a historic moment reaffirming enduring ties rooted in mutual respect, shared history, and a collective vision for global stability.
“It is a profound honour to stand before you today, representing the people of Nigeria as we reaffirm the enduring bonds of friendship, history, and shared purpose,” the president said.
Highlighting democratic and institutional connections, Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s legal and governance systems draw from British traditions, including parliamentary practices, judicial frameworks, and civil service structures, adapted to local realities.
Beyond institutions, Tinubu emphasised people-to-people connections, citing the contributions of Nigerians in the UK across healthcare, academia, business, sports, and public service. He also reaffirmed Nigeria’s active role in the Commonwealth, using the platform to enhance trade, cooperation, and regional development.
On security, the president stressed the importance of UK partnership in addressing terrorism and instability in West Africa, particularly linked to challenges in the Sahel. “Our partnership remains essential as we confront threats to regional stability and safeguard peace in West Africa,” he said.
Tinubu expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, describing the nation as resilient, innovative, and youthful, with strong potential for economic and social growth. He also thanked the UK for its historical support during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle.
King Charles III praised Nigeria as an economic powerhouse and cultural force, highlighting Nigerians’ contributions to British society in sectors including business, healthcare, education, law, technology, and the arts. He also noted growing trade and investment flows between both countries and called for continued cooperation anchored on trust, shared values, and mutual respect.
The banquet, attended by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Queen Camilla, and senior officials, concluded with a toast celebrating the enduring friendship and commitment to a prosperous future for both nations.
