MTN Nigeria has launched a novel public engagement initiative, dubbed “Data on Trial,” to directly address persistent and widespread customer complaints over alleged rapid data depletion and unexpected data consumption patterns. This move comes amid increasing pressure from subscribers, who have long voiced concerns over billing discrepancies across social media and consumer advocacy channels.
Rather than a full, ongoing “public scrutiny” of billing systems, MTN’s initiative is a specific, one-off public forum where stakeholders including independent KPMG representatives, selected consumer advocates, and general attendees, can directly question the company’s technical teams. The public is invited to vote for a five-member “Prosecution Team” to challenge MTN experts, who will present technical evidence and witness testimony.
During the event, MTN officials maintained that data usage is influenced by several factors, including automatic app updates, cloud backups, high-definition video streaming, background activities, and the increasing use of 4G/5G networks.Industry
Industry analysts note that data consumption has risen sharply in recent years as Nigerians increasingly rely on smartphones for entertainment, work, e-commerce, and banking, especially as internet subscriptions surpassed 153 million in Q1 2026. The NCC has also compelled operators to demonstrate full transparency, including providing daily data usage reports, and the regulator has stated that it has not found evidence of deliberate data depletion.
For MTN Nigeria, facing a class-action lawsuit over data depletion and other legal troubles in recent years, the “Data on Trial” exercise represents a significant public relations move to counter negative perceptions. Whether this leads to broader, permanent transparency across the industry remains to be seen.
