Security was noticeably tightened at the National Assembly Complex on Friday as President Bola Tinubu prepared to present the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives.

Reports from the capital indicate that additional armed police personnel were deployed to key entry points of the complex, including the Main (MOPOL) Gate, the Villa Gate, and the Annex Gates. Access was strictly limited to accredited personnel, and individuals without proper clearance were denied entry. Despite these precautions, officials said the accreditation and entry process remained smooth and incident-free.

The usual hustle and bustle associated with the National Assembly was largely absent as human and vehicular traffic were restricted around the complex. Corridors and foyers, normally crowded with legislators, staff, and journalists, were relatively empty, highlighting the level of precautionary measures in place.

President Tinubu is scheduled to present the 2026 budget, with projected estimates amounting to N54.46 trillion, during a plenary session set for 2pm. The presentation is expected to outline the government’s priorities for the upcoming fiscal year, focusing on infrastructure, social services, and economic reforms.

Observers noted that the heightened security reflects both the significance of the budget presentation and ongoing concerns over potential disruptions in the political capital. Security personnel at the scene maintained a visible presence, ensuring that the legislative process proceeded without interference.

The 2026 budget presentation marks a critical moment for the Tinubu administration as it seeks legislative approval for spending plans aimed at driving economic growth and sustaining fiscal stability. With security tightly controlled and access limited, the focus remains on the content and reception of the proposed financial plan, which will shape Nigeria’s economic priorities in the year ahead.
