Gombe FRSC Warns Drivers Over Hazy Weather

The Gombe State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued an urgent public notice to motorists across the state, calling for heightened vigilance as seasonal haze and dusty atmospheric conditions severely impair road visibility. In a statement released on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, by the Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Janet Kasa, the command warned that the current hazy weather poses significant risks to drivers, as impaired vision is a primary catalyst for increased road traffic crashes during this period.

The economic and safety consequence of the harmattan haze is felt most acutely on the major highways connecting Gombe to the rest of the Northeast. Reduced clarity on the roads makes navigating high-speed corridors hazardous, threatening both the lives of commuters and the safe delivery of commercial goods. Reacting to the development, the State Sector Commander, CC Samson Kaura, emphasized that speeding becomes exponentially more dangerous under these conditions. He noted that the margin for error is significantly reduced, making defensive driving not just a recommendation, but a necessity for survival on the road.

Analytically, the FRSC’s safety directive focuses on several technical behaviors to mitigate the risks of poor visibility. Motorists are strictly urged to reduce their speed and comply with prescribed limits, as the reduced reaction time in the haze makes high speeds fatal. Furthermore, drivers are advised to ensure that all essential lighting—including headlights, tail lights, and brake lights are fully functional and used appropriately, even during the daytime. Maintaining a safe following distance and ensuring windscreens are kept clean of dust accumulation are also highlighted as critical steps for maintaining clarity and control.

The impact on “Communal Safety and Public Responsibility” is a vital dimension of this seasonal warning. Commander Samson Kaura appealed to the motoring public to abandon dangerous habits such as reckless driving, wrongful overtaking, and distracted driving, which are often exacerbated by the frustration of slow-moving traffic in hazy weather. By focusing on “Deliberate Caution,” the FRSC aims to foster a collective commitment to road safety that transcends simple enforcement, urging drivers to take personal responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.

The long-term outlook for road safety in Gombe during this season depends on the consistent cooperation between drivers and the Corps. As the command increases its presence on the highways to monitor compliance, the focus remains on preventing avoidable tragedies through education and strict adherence to traffic regulations. For now, the message to Gombe’s motoring public remains clear: the haze is an invisible threat that requires visible caution. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and stay alert until the atmospheric conditions stabilize.
