Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has passed away at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family announced in an official statement on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The announcement was published early Friday on the actor’s verified Instagram page (@francis.duru). While the statement confirmed his passing, the family did not disclose specific details regarding the nature of his illness.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) subsequently confirmed the development, with national executive Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu paying tribute to the late actor and describing his death as a major loss to the Nigerian creative industry.
Duru was a widely respected figure in Nigeria’s film industry with a career spanning over three decades. According to archival profiles maintained by the Nigerian Copyright Commission, he made his screen debut in the 1989 film Missing Mark before going on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996. He rose to national prominence with his portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 classic film Rattlesnake.
Over the years, Duru featured in numerous defining home-video and cinematic productions, including Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013), The Good Husband (2020), and the military drama Eagle Wings (2021).
In addition to his screen work, Duru held several leadership roles and honors within and outside the film industry.
In 2007, he was appointed a United Nations Ambassador of Peace for his contributions to culture and youth advocacy; in 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN); and in 2020, he was recognized at the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, winning Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) for his performance in Mboputa.
Duru’s death comes four months after he addressed public speculation regarding his health. In June 2026, amid circulating online media suggesting he was critically ill, Duru posted a video to his official Instagram account refuting the claims.
As reported at the time by TheCable Lifestyle, the actor dismissed the viral reports as “fabricated and malicious,” urging members of the public and his fans to disregard misleading video content circulating on social platforms.
Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003. The tragedy of his passing follows a difficult period for the family, coming two years after the loss of their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024. Following the teenager’s death, then-AGN National President Emeka Rollas led a delegation to offer condolences and support to the actor’s family, as reported by The Nation.
Duru’s passing marks the end of a prolific career that helped shape contemporary Nigerian cinema from the late 1980s through the digital era.
As of Friday, October 23, 2026, the family has not yet released details regarding funeral arrangements and memorial services.
