ASUU Ultimatum Ends on 21 November as Nationwide University Shutdown Looms

As the one-month ultimatum issued by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) winds down, tensions are rising. The union warns that unless the federal government meets its demands by 21 November 2025, a full-scale shutdown of public universities may be unavoidable. The Kano Zone Coordinator, Comrade Abdulkadir Muhammad, has sharply criticized the government’s progress, calling recent offers devalued by inflation and insufficient to improve lecturers’ welfare.

Muhammad argues that past negotiations have lacked sincerity, accusing government officials of favoring propaganda over genuinely addressing the core issues. “The government’s offers will neither significantly improve the working conditions of Nigerian academics nor attract scholars from other countries,” he said.

ASUU also contends that the proliferation of new universities, many created for political clout rather than educational value, is eroding quality across the sector. The union has urged the government to extend its current moratorium on new federal institutions to state universities, which it says are increasingly being built without adequate funding.

Without a credible resolution, ASUU warns that the breakdown could lead to prolonged academic paralysis, with students losing more time and universities facing long-term disruption.

A shutdown of Nigeria’s public universities doesn’t just stall academics; it deepens economic strain. Small and medium-sized enterprises around campuses, such as eateries, bookstores, and transport services, risk sharp revenue declines. Prolonged idleness among students also weakens the labor force, reducing productivity and potentially fueling social instability. Moreover, frequent strikes undermine investor confidence in Nigeria’s human capital, making the country less attractive to foreign partnerships and harming long-term growth.
