Leading financial institution OPay has been named Fintech/Digital Bank of the Year 2025 at The Sun Awards, marking a historic milestone as the category was introduced for the first time since the awards began.

The award ceremony took place on January 31, 2026, at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, and was organised by The Sun Publishing Limited. The recognition positions OPay as the inaugural recipient of the Fintech/Digital Bank category.

In a statement released on Tuesday, OPay said the award acknowledges its role in building a reliable, inclusive, and easy-to-use digital financial platform that serves millions of Nigerians daily.

The company was recognised for its integrated digital ecosystem, which combines mobile banking, digital wallets, fast payments, merchant services, and lifestyle solutions within a single platform. OPay said this approach continues to bridge the gap between traditional banking and Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy, making financial services more accessible for individuals and businesses.

For many users, OPay has become a daily financial companion, supporting instant transfers, bill payments, and seamless merchant transactions. The company said its technology is designed to solve everyday financial challenges while supporting economic activity at grassroots and enterprise levels.

Reacting to the award, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Adekunle Adedotun, described the recognition as a motivation to deepen the company’s impact.

“This recognition is a welcome development. The Sun has stood out as one of the shining beacons of journalism, and we are pleased to receive the award. This is an incentive to do more. We’re committed to being user-friendly and innovative. Our desire is to see banking services get to every nook and cranny; whether you use Android or Apple, we want to make sure you’re financially included,” he said.

Chief Commercial Officer of OPay, Elizabeth Wang, said the award reflects the trust Nigerians place in the platform.

“This award is a strong validation of our long-term commitment to Nigeria. Being recognised in the first-ever Fintech/Digital Bank category by The Sun is not just an honour for OPay, but a recognition of the trust millions of Nigerians place in us every day. We remain focused on building secure, reliable, and inclusive financial solutions that make life easier for individuals and help businesses grow,” she said.

OPay noted that the recognition reflects years of investment in secure infrastructure, customer experience, and local partnerships, adding that trust and reliability remain central to its mission.

Founded in 2018, OPay provides services including money transfers, bill payments, airtime and data purchases, card services, and merchant payments. The company is licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and insured by the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation.
