Total pension contributions in Nigeria rose to N1.318 trillion in the first nine months of 2025, largely driven by increased remittances from the private sector, according to data released by the National Pension Commission.

An analysis of PenCom’s quarterly reports shows that contributions recorded between January and September 2025 were already close to the N1.368 trillion mobilised throughout the whole of 2024. The figure also nearly matched the N1.319 trillion recorded in 2023 and exceeded the N1.037 trillion contributed in 2022, underscoring sustained growth in pension inflows in recent years.

Data indicate that total pension contributions have consistently surpassed the N1 trillion mark only in the past four years. Cumulatively, pension contributions since the inception of the Contributory Pension Scheme stood at N12.627 trillion as of September 2025.

During the period under review, the private sector contributed N744.36 billion, accounting for the larger share of total inflows, while the public sector recorded contributions of N574.42 billion.

Quarterly figures show a steady rise in contributions, increasing from N389.17 billion in the first quarter to N426.42 billion in the second quarter, before peaking at N503.19 billion in the third quarter. The strong third-quarter performance was largely driven by private sector remittances, which climbed to N338.65 billion, the highest quarterly contribution recorded across both sectors.

Public sector contributions stood at N185.93 billion in the first quarter, rose to N223.95 billion in the second quarter, but declined to N164.54 billion in the third quarter.

Commenting on the figures, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria noted that third-quarter inflows reflected strong compliance with pension obligations, with the private sector accounting for over two-thirds of total remittances. The association attributed the decline in public sector contributions to seasonal disbursement patterns, while the sharp increase in private sector inflows was linked to improved compliance and higher employment-related remittances.

Meanwhile, pension fund assets grew to N26.66 trillion as of October 2025, reinforcing the sector’s position as a major source of long-term domestic capital in Nigeria.
