South African billionaire Koos Bekker’s net worth has taken a hit, falling by $200 million due to a decline in Naspers and Prosus shares.
Bekker, 73, had briefly reached a net worth of over $4 billion earlier this month, but is now back down to $3.8 billion.
The drop is attributed to weakening equity markets rather than any changes in his holdings.
Bekker’s wealth is largely tied to Naspers and Prosus, with stakes worth billions. He owns 0.93% of Naspers and 0.76% of Prosus, which have seen significant share price drops recently. Naspers shares fell nearly 9%, while Prosus shares slid almost 7%.
Interestingly, Bekker had recently sold shares worth nearly R2.5 billion ($150.3 million) through his family trust to fund hospitality projects in South Africa, the UK, and Italy. This isn’t his first major sale; he previously sold shares in 2023 and 2024.
Bekker’s business acumen is renowned, particularly his early investment in Chinese tech giant Tencent, which has yielded immense returns. He’s also built a diverse portfolio, including luxury hospitality assets in South Africa, the UK, and Italy.
