The headquarters of Ikeja Electric Distribution Company in the Alausa area of Lagos was sealed on Thursday by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), following what the regulator described as violations of consumer rights.
Although full details of the events that triggered the enforcement action have not yet been disclosed, the FCCPC confirmed that the move was taken under the powers of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018.
According to Bola Adeyinka, the Commission’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, the decision to seal the facility came only after the company had been given multiple opportunities to comply with regulatory directives. She explained that the enforcement measure was considered proportionate and became necessary after engagements with the power distribution company failed to yield voluntary compliance.
Adeyinka added that the seal would remain in place until Ikeja Electric demonstrates full adherence to the directives issued by both the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the FCCPC, and provides written confirmation of its compliance.
