Hajia Bola Muinat Shagaya is one of Nigeria’s best-known female entrepreneurs, with business interests spanning oil and gas, real estate, photography and banking. Her journey from working at the Central Bank of Nigeria to building a diversified business empire is often cited as an example of how strategic expansion can create long-term wealth.

Shagaya began her professional career in the audit department of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Her experience in finance and accounting gave her an understanding of how businesses and financial systems worked. However, she eventually left the public sector and entered private business in 1983.

Her first major business opportunity came through the importation and distribution of photographic materials. Shagaya introduced Konica photographic products to Nigeria and the wider West African market at a time when the photography industry was developing rapidly.

She later expanded this business by establishing Fotofair Nigeria Limited. In 1997, the company opened a photo laboratory in Lagos using Japanese technology. The business eventually expanded to more than 30 laboratories across Nigeria, helping Shagaya establish a strong presence in the photography and imaging industry.

Rather than remaining in one industry, Shagaya used the success of her early businesses as a foundation for diversification. She moved deeper into the oil and gas industry through Practoil Limited, a company involved in importing and distributing base oil used by lubricant manufacturers.

Practoil became an important part of her business interests. Shagaya later expanded into crude oil trading and exploration through Voyage Oil and Gas Limited, which was established in 2011. Reports have linked the company to crude oil lifting arrangements and trading activities, further expanding her presence in Nigeria’s energy sector.

Real estate became another major part of her wealth-building strategy. Through her wider business interests and Bolmus Group International, Shagaya invested in properties and developments in major Nigerian cities, particularly Lagos and Abuja. Real estate provided her with another source of income and helped spread her investments beyond the oil industry.

Her business empire is associated with Bolmus Group International, which has interests in several sectors. Her involvement in banking has also included service on the board of Unity Bank, formerly Intercity Bank. These activities demonstrate her strategy of building wealth through different industries rather than relying on a single source of income.

Shagaya’s story is therefore less about one business that suddenly made her wealthy and more about decades of expansion, reinvestment and diversification. She started with photographic materials, developed a nationwide photography business, moved into oil and gas, and subsequently built significant interests in property and financial services.

Her career shows the importance of identifying opportunities early and using success in one sector to finance expansion into others. With more than four decades in business, Bola Shagaya has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s prominent female business figures and a symbol of long-term entrepreneurship.
