The Federal Government says work on its planned 90,000 kilometre fibre optic network will begin within the next few weeks, marking a major step in efforts to improve internet access and strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, disclosed this while speaking during an interview on Channels Television. He said the nationwide project is designed to improve broadband coverage, lower internet costs and support businesses that rely on digital services. According to the minister, the project has completed its planning stage and is ready for implementation.

“We are now at the point where, in a matter of weeks, we will begin to roll out 90,000 kilometres of fibre across the country,” he said.

Tijani explained that expanding the country’s fibre network will make it easier for millions of Nigerians to enjoy faster and more reliable internet services. He added that better digital infrastructure would also create opportunities for innovation, education, healthcare and commerce.

The minister said the project is being developed under Project BRIDGE, an initiative backed by the World Bank and other partners. Once completed, the additional fibre network will increase Nigeria’s total fibre coverage from about 35,000 kilometres to roughly 125,000 kilometres, making it one of the largest broadband infrastructure networks in Africa. Tijani noted that the government wants the network to operate on an open access model. This means different internet service providers will be able to use the infrastructure, encouraging competition and helping to reduce the cost of internet services for consumers.

He also stressed that improved connectivity is essential for economic growth, especially as more businesses, schools and government services move online. Speaking on the expected impact, the minister said better internet access would help young entrepreneurs, technology startups and small businesses reach more customers while allowing communities in underserved areas to participate in the digital economy. He expressed confidence that the initiative would transform the country’s digital landscape over the coming years.

“This is not just about laying fibre. It is about creating the foundation for Nigeria’s digital future,” he said.

The government believes the investment will also attract more private sector participation and support the expansion of digital services across the country. Officials expect the project to improve internet quality, strengthen communication networks and provide the infrastructure needed for emerging technologies and digital innovation.

With preparations now complete, attention is shifting to the rollout phase, which the government says will begin within weeks. If delivered as planned, the project is expected to improve broadband access in both urban and rural communities, helping more Nigerians connect to digital opportunities and supporting long term economic development.
