The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) has approved a $91.63 million funding package to help Bauchi State improve its transport network through the construction and completion of major road and bridge projects.

The financing agreement was signed in Lomé, Togo, by the President and Chairman of EBID, Dr. George Donkor, and the Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed. The deal marks a major step toward improving transportation infrastructure and supporting economic development across the state.

The funding will be used to construct and complete 24 important road and bridge projects in different parts of Bauchi State. These projects are expected to connect more urban and rural communities, making it easier for people to travel, move goods, and access schools, hospitals, and other essential services.

Better road networks are also expected to lower transportation costs for businesses and farmers. Easier access to markets will help farmers sell their produce more efficiently while encouraging commercial activities across the state. Improved transport links are seen as a key factor in strengthening agriculture, trade, and small businesses.

The infrastructure programme is in line with the Bauchi State Development Plan and supports Nigeria’s wider economic development goals. Authorities believe the investment will help improve productivity while creating new opportunities for businesses and residents.

One of the biggest benefits of the project will be job creation. During the construction phase, the programme is expected to generate around 5,000 temporary jobs for engineers, construction workers, artisans, suppliers, and other professionals. After the projects are completed, about 2,000 permanent jobs are expected to be created through road maintenance, transport services, and increased economic activities.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Dr. George Donkor said EBID remains committed to supporting projects that have a direct impact on people’s lives and contribute to long-term economic growth.

According to him, better transport infrastructure will reduce the cost of moving goods and services, improve access to markets, attract new investments, and create opportunities for businesses to expand. He added that stronger transport connections will also support regional trade and economic integration across West Africa.

Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed described the agreement as an important achievement for Bauchi State. He said reliable transport infrastructure is one of the foundations of economic growth because it encourages private investment, supports businesses, and improves the quality of life for residents.

The governor thanked EBID for partnering with the state, noting that the financial support would allow the government to speed up several key infrastructure projects that will bring lasting economic and social benefits.

The agreement also highlights EBID’s continuing role as a regional development finance institution dedicated to supporting sustainable growth in West Africa. Through investments in infrastructure, agriculture, energy, and other strategic sectors, the bank aims to help member countries strengthen their economies and improve living standards.

This latest investment also supports EBID’s Growth, Resilience and Optimisation (GRO) Strategy, which focuses on promoting sustainable development, building stronger economies, and increasing the long-term impact of development financing across the ECOWAS region.

With improved roads and bridges expected to transform transportation across Bauchi State, the project is widely seen as an important investment that could stimulate business activities, encourage private sector participation, and support inclusive economic growth for years to come.
