FG Disburses ₦2.3bn to ASUU, Boosts Welfare and Revives Talks

In a move likely to ease rising tensions, the federal government has released ₦2.3 billion to cover “Batch 8 salary and promotion arrears” owed to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The payment signals a renewed push to address grievances while deepening ongoing dialogue and strengthening welfare for academic staff.

Officials say this partial release is not the end but a gesture to build trust. The government insists work continues to settle outstanding liabilities in full. It also plans to intensify engagement with ASUU leaders to prevent future breakdowns in negotiations.

Meanwhile, ASUU has welcomed the payment but urged vigilance, saying it will continue pressing for transparency and full compliance. Some union members view the release as a positive step, while others warn it’s only meaningful if it leads to substantive, lasting improvements in conditions of service.

With the arrears addressed progressively, the government hopes to forestall fresh strikes and maintain stability within public universities. Educational institutions, many operating under strain from previous disruptions, could now potentially resume smoother operations. Observers see this as part of a broader effort to repair relations and reinforce morale among lecturers, who have often cited poor welfare and unpaid dues as core complaints.

The move comes against a backdrop of tight public finances. Nigeria’s budget constraints and competing demands on federal revenue have long made it difficult to honor commitments on schedule. Still, the release reflects political will to uphold education as a priority for national development.

By disbursing ₦2.3 billion amid revenue pressures, the government signals resolve to support public education despite tight fiscal space. The move may boost investor confidence in governance, but recurring arrears risk undermining public sector productivity and diverting funds from essential developmental projects.
