Cameroon Faces Internet Blackout as Protests Erupt Over Disputed Election

Internet access across Cameroon has been severely disrupted following widespread protests triggered by alleged irregularities in the country’s recent presidential election.

According to NetBlocks, a global internet observatory, connectivity has been sharply curtailed nationwide, limiting communication and media coverage of unfolding events.

The disruption began shortly after demonstrations broke out in major cities, with opposition supporters demanding transparency and fresh polls.

Protests Spread After Petitions Dismissed

Tensions flared after the Constitutional Council dismissed all legal petitions challenging the results of the October 12 presidential election. The decision effectively cleared the path for the official declaration of results, which are expected to reaffirm President Paul Biya’s long-standing rule.

Biya, 92, has held power for 43 years and is widely anticipated to retain his position, despite mounting discontent among citizens who accuse his government of electoral manipulation and authoritarianism.

Reports indicate that protests and clashes between security forces and opposition groups have erupted in cities including Maroua and Garoua, with eyewitnesses describing heavy police presence and sporadic violence.

Civil society organisations and international observers have expressed concern over the internet blackout, warning that it could further obscure the situation on the ground and hinder freedom of expression during a critical political moment for the Central African nation.
