Nigeria’s oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, has announced a major milestone in its gas infrastructure development. The firm confirmed the successful completion of a critical section of the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben (OB3) gas pipeline project, specifically the challenging River Niger crossing. The development was captured in a report, highlighting the importance of the project to Nigeria’s energy sector.
For years, the River Niger crossing had delayed the full completion of the OB3 pipeline due to technical difficulties involved in laying pipes beneath the riverbed. This section was widely regarded as the most complex part of the entire project. With the crossing now completed, the OB3 pipeline is expected to significantly improve gas transportation across the country. The pipeline links key gas-producing regions in southern Nigeria to other parts of the country, supporting both domestic supply and industrial use. The OB3 pipeline itself spans about 127 kilometres and is designed to move large volumes of natural gas efficiently.
Prior to this milestone, only sections of the pipeline were operational, with partial gas flows already recorded from completed segments. Now fully connected, the infrastructure is expected to unlock up to 2 billion cubic feet of gas per day (2bcf/d). This increase in capacity is a major boost for Nigeria’s ambition to expand gas utilisation, improve electricity generation, and support industrial growth.The completion also strengthens the country’s broader gas network, particularly its connection to major projects like the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline. Together, these systems form a backbone for transporting gas from the south to the northern regions, improving energy access nationwide.
In addition, the milestone aligns with Nigeria’s long-term energy strategy, which focuses on using natural gas as a transition fuel for economic development and cleaner energy. The OB3 pipeline is considered a key component of this plan, often described as critical to unlocking the nation’s vast gas reserves.NNPC noted that overcoming the River Niger crossing challenge marks a breakthrough after years of delays and technical setbacks.
