The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has disclosed that its Teachers Social Security Endwell Scheme disbursed a total of N270.2 million to beneficiaries in 2026, strengthening its role as a key welfare support system for educators in the state.
The disclosure was made in Ibadan on Thursday by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the scheme, Mr Obasola Olayiwola, during the 14th Biennial General Meeting and the 30th anniversary celebration of the initiative.
According to him, the payment represented about 75 per cent of the total benefits owed to members, distributed to 1,057 beneficiaries who had made contributions to the scheme.
Olayiwola noted that between 2022 and 2026, the scheme had consistently fulfilled its financial obligations despite a rising number of retiring teachers in Oyo State, which increased the volume of withdrawals made for terminal benefits.
He explained that the financial stability of the scheme was achieved through careful management and diversified investments in fixed deposits, agriculture, landed property, and the education sector.
“One of the major investments of the scheme is the NUT Model College, which comprises primary and secondary sections and has continued to record strong academic performance.
Many graduates of the school were already in tertiary institutions across the country, while others had completed their first degrees,” Olayiwola said.
He further commended the efforts of both staff and union members for sustaining the success and growth of the Endwell Scheme over the years.
Earlier in the event, the Chairman of NUT in Oyo State, Mr Raji Oladimeji, expressed appreciation to members for their commitment to sustaining the scheme over the past three decades.
He described the Endwell Scheme as an important welfare intervention designed to support teachers, especially after retirement, and urged members to remain dedicated to its continued progress and sustainability.
“Endwell Scheme was conceived as a rescue mission to ameliorate the miserable living condition of teachers at the retirement as occasioned by agony of late payment of their gratuities and pensions.
It was an era that was known with the slogan ‘This House is for Rent but not for teachers.
The situation became worse then when retiring primary school teachers became psychologically and emotionally disturbed as no tier of government was willing to accept responsibility for their plight,” Oladimeji said.
He added that the scheme had significantly improved the welfare of teachers, ensuring they now approach retirement with greater confidence and financial relief.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the occasion and Chairman of the Oyo State Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Kamorudeen Aderibigbe, praised the union for sustaining the initiative and preserving the vision of its founding leaders.
He said the scheme had helped teachers access their entitlements more efficiently while allowing them to focus on their duties without undue financial anxiety.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Endwell Scheme was established to provide social security and welfare support for teachers in Oyo State after retirement.
NAN further reports that the event also featured special recognition of founding fathers and key contributors to the scheme, including Mr Olu Abiala, NUT pioneer Secretary, and Mr Ibrahim Bolomope, a former NUT Chairman.
