The World Bank has given the green light to a $500 million International Development Association (IDA) credit for Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in the country’s quest to revamp its agricultural sector.

The Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth (AGROW) Project is poised to address the long-standing structural challenges that have hindered Nigeria’s agriculture sector, including low productivity, climate shocks, and weak market access.

This ambitious initiative aims to transform the agricultural landscape by improving the productivity of smallholder farmers, linking them more effectively to markets and agribusinesses, and creating much-needed jobs.

By prioritizing aggregation, post-harvest handling, agro-processing, and improved market access for key staple crops like rice, maize, cassava, and soybeans, the project seeks to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The AGROW Project is expected to have a profound impact on the lives of up to one million smallholder farmers, who will benefit from improved yields, enhanced resilience to environmental shocks, and better access to markets.

Moreover, the project is anticipated to mobilize significant private sector investment, with an estimated $220 million in private agribusiness investment expected to be crowded in.

This influx of investment will have a ripple effect, creating new opportunities for economic growth and development.

The project’s focus on strengthening agricultural research and extension systems, introducing a national digital farm and farmer registry, and promoting transparent land-based investments is designed to create a more conducive environment for agricultural growth.

Additionally, the project will support agribusinesses that commit to sourcing produce from smallholder farmers, providing a vital lifeline to these farmers and helping to improve food security.

The World Bank’s Country Director for Nigeria, Mathew Verghis, hailed the AGROW Project as a “transformative step for Nigeria’s agriculture, empowering smallholder farmers, unlocking private sector-led growth, and strengthening food security in a sustainable way.”

The project aligns with Nigeria’s priorities to enhance productivity, create jobs, and deepen value addition across agricultural value chains, and forms a key part of the World Bank’s Agriconnect initiative aimed at transforming smallholder farming systems globally.

This latest loan approval comes on the heels of the World Bank’s earlier financing package to expand access to credit for micro, small, and medium enterprises in Nigeria, aimed at easing persistent funding constraints limiting business growth.

The AGROW Project is a testament to the World Bank’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development efforts and improving the lives of its people.

As Nigeria embarks on this ambitious journey to transform its agricultural sector, the AGROW Project is poised to play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, improving food security, and enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. With its focus on sustainability, private sector-led growth, and empowerment of smallholder farmers, this project has the potential to unlock a brighter future for Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
