The Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) concluded the trading week on a bullish note, with the All-Share Index (ASI) and market capitalisation rising by 0.73%. The index climbed to 198,407.30 points, while the total market value of listed equities reached N127.361 trillion. This performance represents a significant recovery from the previous week’s close of 196,968.15 and N126.437 trillion, resulting in a N924 billion gain for investors over the five-day period.

The structural and sectoral consequence of the week’s trading showed a mixed bag of results. While many indices finished lower, key sectors such as Industrial Goods (+5.73%), Oil and Gas (+1.50%), and the Main Board (+1.99%) provided the necessary momentum to lift the broad market. Other gainers included the Consumer Goods, NGX 30, and Pension Broad indices. In terms of individual stock performance, Premier Paints, Conoil, and BUA Cement emerged as the top price gainers, with BUA Cement recording a notable N45 increase.

Analytically, market activity showed a slight deceleration in volume and value compared to the preceding week. A total of 3.321 billion shares valued at N164.845 billion were exchanged across 318,907 deals, down from the 3.695 billion shares traded previously. The Financial Services Industry remained the primary driver of market liquidity, accounting for 65.61% of the total volume. Investor interest was heavily concentrated in Access Holdings Plc, Fortis Global Insurance Plc, and First Holdco Plc, which together contributed over 20% of the total equity volume.

The impact on “Market Sentiment and Corporate Actions” was further highlighted by the commencement of the Linkage Assurance Plc rights issue. The NGX notified trading licence holders that the insurance firm is offering 12.3 billion ordinary shares at N1.32 per share. The offer, which opened on Wednesday, is based on two new shares for every three held as of January 22, 2026. This move suggests a continued trend of recapitalization within the insurance sector to strengthen balance sheets against evolving regulatory requirements.

Furthermore, the breadth of the market skewed toward the “bears” despite the overall index gain. Sixty-one equities declined in price compared to only thirty-four gainers, indicating that the index rise was largely driven by heavy-weight industrial and energy stocks rather than a broad-based market rally. SCOA Nigeria Plc and Fortis Global Insurance Plc led the losers’ chart, shedding N11.70 and 31 kobo, respectively.

The long-term outlook for the Nigerian capital market remains tied to the performance of these large-cap industrial players and the stability of the financial services sector. As the market navigates a landscape of shifting interest rates and corporate earnings releases, the significant market capitalization of N127.361 trillion underscores the NGX’s role as a critical pillar of the national economy. For investors, the focus shifts to the upcoming dividend season and the absorption of the various rights issues currently entering the market.
