Energy consortium Sahara Group has commissioned a new liquefied petroleum gas carrier, MT Asharami Ghana, to strengthen cooking gas supply in Ghana. The 40,000-cubic-metre vessel, launched in Ulsan, South Korea, is designed to improve LPG supply reliability, ease logistics constraints, and support the country’s clean cooking and energy access goals.
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama described the vessel as an important step in strengthening the infrastructure that supports global LPG distribution and energy security. According to Sahara Group, the ship will help secure an additional 25,000 metric tonnes of LPG stock for Ghana’s economy, while complementing a planned 12,000-metric-tonne storage facility in Tema.
With the addition of Asharami Ghana, Sahara’s LPG fleet now has six vessels with a combined capacity of about 202,000 cubic metres, with more capacity under construction. The investment supports Ghana’s goal of increasing LPG adoption from 30 percent of households to 50 percent by 2030 while expanding energy access across the region.
