WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that lets users unlock their encrypted chat backups using passkeys such as fingerprints, Face ID or device screen‑lock codes, making the process of retrieving old chats much simpler and more secure.
Previously, WhatsApp required users to either remember a password or hold onto a 64‑character encryption key if they wanted to restore their chat history. While that method offered strong security, it also created a risk: losing the password or key meant losing access to your backups.
With the new passkey‑based system, the burden on the user is reduced. Rather than keeping track of a complex key or password, you just use the biometric or screen‑lock method already set up on your device. That means if you switch phones or lose your device, you can get your encrypted chats back more easily, so long as you can prove it’s you via your fingerprint, face, or device code.
WhatsApp’s rollout will be gradual: the company said the update will reach users in the coming weeks and months. In fact, some users in Nigeria have already reported seeing the passkey option active in their settings. To check if you have the feature, go to Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → End‑to‑end Encrypted Backup, and see whether you can choose use passkey.
The introduction of passkey support comes as part of WhatsApp’s broader push to improve safety and privacy across its platform. The parent company, Meta Platforms, has also taken steps such as banning millions of scam‑related accounts and collaborating with OpenAI to curb AI‑generated fraud messages.
From a user perspective, this update is meaningful. It enhances convenience without compromising security. Instead of juggling a long encryption key or worrying about forgetting a password, users rely on familiar device‑based authentication. And because the backup is still end‑to‑end encrypted, WhatsApp itself cannot read the contents of your chats during storage or transit. While that model of encryption was introduced in 2021, the key challenge has been usability—something this passkey approach addresses.
For the broader ecosystem, the shift signals that major messaging platforms are evolving how they manage security. Not just tightening encryption, but also making it easier for everyday users to engage with strong protections.
