TETFund Pours N30 Billion+ Into Campus Security, A Strategic Move to Safeguard Nigerian Tertiary Institutions

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has committed more than N30 billion this year to improving security across Nigeria’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Speaking in Katsina, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Aminu Masari, said the funding will enhance safety for students, lecturers, and other campus residents. He explained that, “just as we created a budget line for electricity, we also deemed it fit to establish a dedicated line for security.”

According to Masari, many institutions had already applied for support to install “solar-powered streetlights, perimeter fences, and other security projects aimed at reducing threats on campuses.”

The security upgrade is part of a broader wave of interventions by TETFund following its record-breaking allocation of N1.6 trillion for 2025, the largest in the agency’s history. Under this allocation, N460 billion has been earmarked for direct institutional interventions nationwide, while N225 billion has gone to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support student-loan initiatives.

Also among the priorities: energy and infrastructure. For example, N70 billion has been allocated to fund solar and gas-powered energy projects on campuses to improve power supply.

The Board of Trustees praised the support of the federal government, especially the recent approval of a 50% Development Levy under the 2024 Nigerian Tax Bill, which is expected to boost TETFund’s capacity to deliver on its commitments.

In addition, a national town hall meeting was recently organised to bring together policymakers, lawmakers, vice-chancellors, student leaders, and other stakeholders. The goal is to gather feedback that will help shape more inclusive and responsive policies for Nigeria’s tertiary-education sector.

Masari said this platform is crucial for addressing the pressing challenges facing tertiary institutions and steering Nigeria’s tertiary education system toward global competitiveness in research, infrastructure, manpower development, and campus welfare.

Overall, the renewed funding and enhanced security drive reflect a broader commitment to improving living conditions, safety, and educational quality across Nigeria’s higher-education landscape.

Investing N30 billion in campus security not only safeguards students and staff; it helps protect physical and human capital, thereby reducing disruptions that could delay graduations or impair workforce entry. That in turn supports economic productivity, helps optimise return on public education spending, and enhances long-term national human-capital value.
