Starlink Unveils Satellites To Deliver 5G Directly

SpaceX’s satellite internet service, Starlink, has announced a new phase in its technology roadmap that aims to deliver mobile connectivity directly from space to ordinary smartphones. The initiative relies on a new generation of satellites designed to function like cellular towers in orbit, enabling users to connect even in locations where conventional telecom infrastructure is absent.

The company said its upcoming satellites will support direct mobile connectivity, allowing compatible smartphones to link to its network without requiring specialized hardware. According to the announcement, the system is being built to provide widespread coverage and extend connectivity to areas traditionally considered unreachable by terrestrial networks.

Starlink explained that the new satellites will support its mobile service architecture, which allows devices on the ground to connect to satellites in low Earth orbit. The system is expected to deliver high speed data and eventually support 5G level connectivity. The company stated that the satellites will power what it described as “the highest performing satellite to mobile network built so far.”

The technology is part of Starlink’s broader Direct to Cell initiative. The concept allows standard smartphones to communicate with satellites in the same way they would connect to traditional mobile base stations. Instead of relying solely on land based towers, signals are routed through satellites positioned thousands of kilometres above the Earth.

Under the system, mobile phones that support LTE connectivity will be able to connect to the satellite network whenever there is a clear view of the sky. The satellite effectively acts as a “cell tower in space,” extending coverage beyond the limits of terrestrial telecom infrastructure.

The next generation satellites, often referred to as V2 units, are designed with significantly higher capacity than the current fleet. Industry reports indicate that these satellites could deliver far greater data density and throughput, enabling improved streaming, browsing and communication services for users.

At present, satellite to smartphone connectivity is still evolving. Early versions of the service have primarily supported basic messaging and limited data functions. However, the new generation satellites are expected to expand the system’s capability to include voice calls and higher speed internet access.

The development also reflects a wider shift in the global telecommunications sector, where satellite networks are increasingly being integrated with traditional mobile services. Partnerships between satellite operators and telecom companies are already emerging in several markets, with the aim of eliminating mobile network “dead zones.”

For countries with large rural or underserved populations, the technology could have significant implications. Satellite to device connectivity may help extend digital access to remote communities where building mobile towers is either costly or impractical.

If successfully deployed at scale, Starlink’s new satellites could reshape the boundaries of mobile connectivity by merging satellite infrastructure with everyday smartphones. The company’s long term objective is to create near global mobile coverage, ensuring that users remain connected even far from conventional cellular networks.
