The Rivers State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a targeted arson attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secretariat in Ubima, a community situated near Port Harcourt. Command spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko confirmed the incident, stating that detectives are aggressively pursuing leads to identify the perpetrators and their sponsors. Reports indicate that suspected political thugs set the ward office ablaze in the early hours of Friday, specifically choosing a location in the hometown of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Prior to the fire, the attackers reportedly mounted roadblocks along the Omuma-Ubima Road, intercepting vehicles in an attempt to seize ADC materials and banners. This escalation represents a significant “asymmetric threat” to local political stability and creates a “logistics bottleneck” for democratic engagement. The timing is particularly notable, as an eyewitness reported the attack occurred just before the arrival of party leadership for an ongoing e-registration exercise. This suggests a calculated attempt to widen the “legitimacy gap” and disrupt the party’s “infrastructure of distribution” for new memberships.
While no lives were lost in the inferno, the destruction of party documents and the facility itself represents a serious blow to the “security of the mandate” for peaceful political participation. The police have deployed a specialized detachment to the scene to assess the full extent of the damage, which remains undetermined. This act of violence increases “fiscal friction” for political organizations and undermines the “security of the person” in the lead-up to the 2026 political cycle.
From a macroeconomic perspective, such volatility in Rivers State often raises the “cost of doing business” and threatens the “stability of the policy” environment required for regional growth. The police command has urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with investigators to ensure the “verifiability of results” in the ongoing probe. Ultimately, bringing the arsonists to justice is a prerequisite for upholding the “social contract” and ensuring the “democracy dividend” is protected from “digital regression” and physical intimidation across the federation.
