The Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOp) has released a pivotal report titled “Pension Funds and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria,” spotlighting the transformative potential of pension funds in driving the nation’s infrastructure growth. Launched at a high-profile event in Lagos, the report underscores the critical role of Nigeria’s pension industry, managing assets worth over N21 trillion, in addressing the country’s infrastructure deficit, estimated at $100 billion annually by the African Development Bank.
The report, a collaborative effort with Agusto & Co, explores how pension funds can bridge Nigeria’s infrastructure gap through strategic investments. It highlights the pension sector’s growing influence, with contributions from 10.4 million Nigerians under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). Despite global economic challenges, the industry has maintained an average annual growth rate of 20% over the past two decades, showcasing its resilience and potential as a catalyst for development.
At the launch, PenOp’s CEO, Oguche Agudah, emphasized the report’s significance, stating, “Pension funds are not just about retirement security; they can be a game-changer for Nigeria’s infrastructure.” He urged stakeholders to leverage the report’s insights to unlock new investment opportunities. Agusto & Co’s Managing Director, Yinka Adelekan, echoed this sentiment, noting, “Pension funds can play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s development by channeling capital into critical sectors like power, transportation, and housing.”
The event drew key industry figures, including Omobola Otuyiga, Head of Investment Research at Agusto & Co, who presented the report’s findings. She highlighted successful case studies, such as pension-backed infrastructure bonds, and outlined strategies to mitigate investment risks. The report also addresses regulatory hurdles, calling for policies that balance risk management with innovation to encourage pension fund investments in infrastructure.
PenOp’s initiative aims to spark dialogue among regulators, policymakers, and investors to create a framework that maximizes the pension industry’s impact. By showcasing the synergy between pension funds and infrastructure, the report positions Nigeria’s pension sector as a cornerstone for sustainable economic growth, offering a blueprint for stakeholders to transform the nation’s infrastructure landscape.
