The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is currently holding its national convention at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, amidst a deepening party crisis.
The convention, which started today, March 29, 2026, is expected to affirm the Acting National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and other members of the National Working Committee.
The event is being organized by the faction loyal to Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, with about 2,500 delegates in attendance.
However, the convention is facing opposition from another faction led by Kabiru Turaki, who has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court.
Despite the crisis, Wike has expressed confidence that the convention will demonstrate the party’s strength and unity. He has also emphasized the importance of reconciliation and discipline within the party.
The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis, with nine governors leaving the party since the 2023 presidential election.
The party’s national convention is seen as a crucial step towards resolving the crisis and repositioning the party for the 2027 general elections.
