In a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections, former presidential candidate Peter Obi has officially left the Labour Party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He announced the move in Enugu on Wednesday, describing it as a strategic decision to build a unified platform capable of rescuing Nigeria from its mounting economic and security challenges.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s popular candidate in the 2023 election, stated that his new political home is part of a “rescue journey” and called on other opposition leaders to unite under the ADC to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection event was attended by a host of political heavyweights, including ADC National Chairman David Mark, former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal, and prominent senators like Victor Umeh and Enyinaya Abaribe, signaling a potential consolidation of opposition forces.

Obi emphasized the need for electoral reforms and vowed to resist any attempts at rigging in the 2027 elections by all lawful means.
