Yakubu Mohammed, a celebrated veteran journalist and co-founder of the defunct Newswatch magazine, has passed away at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness.

His death comes just under two months after the passing of his longtime colleague and fellow Newswatch co-founder, Dan Agbese.

Mohammed had launched his memoir, “Beyond Expectations,” in November 2025, chronicling his life and the history of Newswatch.

Born in Ologba, Kogi State, Mohammed’s distinguished career included editorial leadership roles at New Nigerian Newspapers and National Concord before co-founding Newswatch in 1984.

He also served as the pro-chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University.
