Nigerian media entrepreneur Mo Abudu has expanded her entertainment business into London, adding an international cultural venue to a career that began with a television talk show and has earned her a place on Forbes Africa’s inaugural Icons list for 2026.

Abudu is among four Nigerians featured on the list, alongside industrialist Aliko Dangote, World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and singer Burna Boy. The PUNCH reported on October 11, 2026, that the 15-person selection appears in Forbes Africa’s October–November anniversary edition, marking 15 years of the magazine.

According to Forbes Africa, the list recognises individuals whose ideas, innovations and voices have made a lasting impact on Africa’s development and global standing. The selection spans business, public leadership, entertainment, literature, music and sport, and is presented in no particular order.

For Abudu, the recognition follows years of building businesses around African content, film production and creative talent development.

Born in London on September 11, 1964, Abudu began her professional career in human resources before moving into media. She worked in corporate recruitment and later joined Esso Exploration & Production Nigeria Limited, now part of ExxonMobil, before establishing Vic Lawrence & Associates, a human resources development company.

Her transition into entertainment came with the launch of Moments with Mo in 2006. The syndicated talk show featured prominent personalities and gave Abudu a platform to promote African experiences and perspectives to audiences across the continent.

According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), her subsequent ventures included EbonyLife TV, launched in 2013, and EbonyLife Films, established in 2014. The IFC identifies EbonyLife Group as a business spanning media production, creative training and entertainment experiences.

The company’s film portfolio includes The Wedding Party and Òlòtūré. EbonyLife has also partnered with international studios and distributors, including Sony, Netflix, Lionsgate, BBC and Westbrook Studios. The IFC says EbonyLife Media became the first African company to sign a multi-title deal with Netflix.

Beyond production, Abudu has invested in talent development through EbonyLife Creative Academy, which offers film and television training to emerging Nigerian creatives. EbonyLife Place, launched in Lagos in 2019, extended the business into hospitality and entertainment.

Her latest expansion is EbonyLife Place London, which officially opened on October 8, 2026. According to Screen Daily on October 9, 2026, the venue includes a 160-seat cinema dedicated to African and Black films, alongside restaurant, bar and retail facilities. Its programme is intended to showcase Nollywood and other African productions, as well as films and stories from the wider Black diaspora.

The London venue also plans to host industry discussions, masterclasses and live performances, creating opportunities for filmmakers and other creatives to connect with audiences and industry professionals. Its opening was attended by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who welcomed the project as an addition to the city’s cultural offering.

The expansion reflects a business strategy that goes beyond making films to creating platforms through which African stories can reach international audiences. By combining cinema with food, fashion, art and live events, EbonyLife Place London seeks to build a broader commercial and cultural presence for African creativity.

Abudu was also named among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2025. Her growing international profile places her among Nigerian entrepreneurs building businesses around the country’s creative industries.

From human resources to television, film production and an international cultural venue, Abudu’s career demonstrates how professional reinvention can develop into a business spanning multiple markets. Her latest London venture gives that ambition a physical base in one of the world’s major cultural centres.
