Mauritius-based investor Peter McAllister Todd has seen his holdings in Afine Investments decline sharply, shedding approximately $3.2 million in value following a month of steady share price weakness on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE).

Todd, founder of Afine Investments and former head of Osiris Group, holds 56.4 million ordinary shares, representing a controlling 77.78 percent of the company. Over the past 29 trading days, the market value of his stake fell by R55.29 million ($3.22 million), reducing its worth to R226.23 million ($13.17 million). Afine’s share price dropped 19.64 percent in the same period, sliding from R4.99 ($0.29) to R4.01 ($0.23).

Operational performance remains steady

Despite the market setback, Afine’s core business continues to demonstrate resilience. The property firm, which owns nine high-volume petrol filling stations across four provinces in South Africa, reported an 11.47 percent year-on-year increase in revenue to R26.67 million ($1.56 million). Operating profit rose 11.14 percent to R24.37 million ($1.43 million), while net earnings jumped 29.04 percent to R18.96 million ($1.11 million).

Earnings per share climbed 18.6 percent to R0.26 ($0.015), and net asset value per share increased 14.25 percent to R4.65 ($0.272), reflecting steady balance-sheet strengthening.

Investor concerns and strategic outlook

The drop in Afine’s market capitalisation below $20 million has sparked concern among investors, highlighting the cyclical vulnerabilities of small-cap property stocks. Management has stressed its focus on debt restraint and cash generation, signalling plans to expand the portfolio cautiously while maintaining reliable distributions to shareholders.

Analysts note that while Afine’s fundamentals remain sound, the share price decline underscores the sensitivity of smaller listed firms to market sentiment and liquidity pressures.

As Todd’s stake demonstrates, even significant investors are exposed to the swings in small-cap real estate equities. For Afine, sustaining investor confidence may hinge on continued operational growth, cautious asset acquisition, and transparent communication on market strategy.
