For many Nigerian job seekers, LinkedIn is a place to upload a CV, list qualifications and wait for opportunities. But recruiters can use the platform to search for candidates by job title, skills, location and experience, meaning a qualified applicant may be overlooked if their profile does not clearly communicate what they can do.

LinkedIn is not simply an online CV. It is also a professional search and recruitment platform, and how candidates describe their skills and experience can influence whether recruiters find them.

Recruiters Search Before They Contact

LinkedIn’s official help documentation confirms that its Recruiter and Recruiter Lite products allow employers to search for candidates using job titles, locations, skills and keywords. Recruiters can also combine search filters to narrow results to people who match specific requirements.

In its guidance on LinkedIn recruitment searches, recruitment firm Bravanti identifies the headline, summary, experience and skills sections as important areas candidates should complete accurately.

The implication for job seekers is straightforward: recruiters may search for a specific combination of skills and experience before opening individual profiles.

A candidate targeting credit analysis, for example, should make relevant experience and skills such as financial analysis, credit assessment and risk management visible where they genuinely apply. A profile that says only “seeking new opportunities” provides less useful information about the work the person can perform.

Your Headline Should Name Your Target Role

A LinkedIn headline is more useful when it identifies a person’s professional direction than when it relies on motivational slogans.

Compare “Dreamer | Hustler | Achiever” with “Credit Analyst | Financial Analysis | Risk Management”. The second headline immediately communicates a target role and relevant expertise.

Job seekers should use the job titles employers actually advertise, provided those titles accurately reflect their experience or career target. Graduates without formal experience can use descriptions such as “Entry-Level Accountant | Financial Reporting | Microsoft Excel” if they possess the stated skills.

The headline is only one part of the profile, however. LinkedIn’s search system also draws on information in other sections, so adding keywords to a headline while leaving the rest of the profile empty is unlikely to tell a recruiter enough. (While filling out all sections is important, LinkedIn’s algorithm prioritizes title keywords in the Current Experience section and Headline slightly higher than general body text during initial candidate ranking.)

Skills and Experience Must Support the Claim

LinkedIn says its Recruiter skills filters can identify skills explicitly listed in the Skills section and relevant keywords found elsewhere in a candidate’s profile. Its Skills Match feature also helps recruiters compare applicants’ qualifications with job requirements.

This makes accurate, specific skills more useful than broad claims such as “hardworking”, “dynamic” or “results-oriented”.

Candidates should study job descriptions in their chosen fields, identify the recurring technical and professional requirements, and include those they can genuinely demonstrate.

The experience section should then provide evidence. Instead of writing “responsible for loan processing”, a credit professional could write, “Reviewed loan applications, checked supporting documents and prepared credit assessments for decision-making.”

Where reliable figures are available, measurable achievements can strengthen the description. Candidates should never invent percentages, revenue figures or accomplishments to make their profiles appear impressive.

For recent graduates and National Youth Service Corps members with limited employment history, relevant projects, internships, volunteer work, coursework and practical assignments can help demonstrate transferable skills.

Open to Work Can Improve Discoverability

Job seekers actively looking for opportunities should review LinkedIn’s Open to Work settings and specify their preferred job titles, locations and workplace arrangements.

LinkedIn says sharing these preferences can help a profile appear in recruiter searches for suitable candidates. Members can choose to make their status visible to all LinkedIn members or to recruiters using LinkedIn Recruiter.

The recruiter-only option avoids displaying the public Open to Work photo frame, but LinkedIn warns that it cannot guarantee complete privacy from recruiters at a person’s current employer.

LinkedIn also says recruiters receive a notification when a sourced candidate already in their project pipeline updates their profile to Open to Work, although this does not apply to imported candidates.

The feature can improve visibility, but it does not guarantee that a recruiter will contact the candidate or offer a job.

Visibility Also Requires Caution

A more visible profile can attract genuine opportunities, but job seekers must also guard against fraudulent recruiters.

LinkedIn’s official guidance on recognising scams warns against job offers that promise unusually high pay for little work, request money during recruitment, demand sensitive financial information too early or pressure applicants to move conversations immediately to WhatsApp or Telegram.

Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Finance issued a public warning on July 29, 2026, after disowning a purported ₦50,000 resumption fee allegedly demanded from newly recruited staff. The ministry said applicants should not pay administrative, processing or resumption fees during recruitment and onboarding.

Before submitting sensitive documents, candidates should verify vacancies through an employer’s official careers page and check the recruiter’s identity and company affiliation. A professional-looking LinkedIn profile alone is not proof that a recruiter is genuine.

Applicants should never pay to secure a job or disclose bank details, passwords or sensitive identity documents to unverified contacts.

Make Your Profile Searchable and Credible

Nigerian job seekers do not need to become LinkedIn influencers to use the platform effectively. They need profiles that make their professional value easy to understand.

Use a relevant job title in the headline, list specific skills, describe experience with evidence, keep employment and education details accurate, and set appropriate job preferences.

Most importantly, make sure the profile matches the roles being pursued and the abilities the candidate can demonstrate.

A polished CV remains important, but a searchable LinkedIn profile can help put that CV in front of the right person. Being discoverable is not a substitute for competence; it is one way to ensure that competence has a better chance of being noticed.
