The Lagos State Government is targeting 19 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across the state by the first quarter of 2027 as it moves to expand access to cheaper transportation fuel and reduce long queues at existing refuelling facilities.

The Managing Director of Ibile Oil and Gas Corporation (IOGC), Tayo Gbajumo, disclosed this on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a briefing on the forthcoming 2026 Lagos Energy Summit.

According to a report by The Punch published on Friday, November 6, 2026, Gbajumo said the state was working with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to expand CNG infrastructure and improve fuel accessibility.

He disclosed that Lagos currently has four operational CNG stations in Ikorodu, Agege, Ojota and Oshodi, while five additional facilities are scheduled to be commissioned by November 12, 2026.

The planned expansion will bring the number of operational stations to nine before the government moves towards its target of 19 by the first quarter of 2027.

Gbajumo also said the state intends to establish another 10 stations by the first quarter of 2028 as it continues expanding its alternative fuel infrastructure.

He attributed the long queues at existing CNG stations to inadequate infrastructure, explaining that increasing the number of refuelling facilities was necessary to improve access and reduce waiting times.

The expansion is expected to give motorists and commercial transport operators more options for accessing CNG, which the government is promoting as a cheaper alternative to petrol.

Beyond infrastructure, Gbajumo addressed concerns about the safety and cost of converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG.

He urged motorists to ensure that certified engineers handle vehicle conversions, warning that proper installation was important for safety.

On conversion costs, he estimated that motorists would spend between ₦700,000 and ₦1 million, depending on the quality and standard of equipment used.

He added that filling a 60-kilogramme CNG tank costs approximately ₦5,000 and could provide a driving range of about 200 kilometres, depending on usage.

The Lagos CNG expansion forms part of the state’s broader energy transition strategy, which seeks to promote alternative fuels, improve transportation affordability and strengthen energy infrastructure.

The announcement comes ahead of the 2026 Lagos Energy Summit scheduled for November 10 to 12, with the theme, “Lagos Energy Evolution: Transforming the Future.”

Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources Biodun Ogunleye said the summit would bring together regulators, investors, energy experts, distribution companies and innovators to discuss challenges across the energy value chain.

The discussions will cover electricity supply, renewable energy, metering, energy affordability and mobility, including the adoption of CNG and electric vehicles.

The state government says it wants the summit to produce practical solutions for improving energy access and developing a more efficient energy system in Lagos.
