Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was sworn in on Monday as Ghana’s new Chief Justice by President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra. His appointment, confirmed by Parliament last week, follows the dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo and brings to a close a period of transition at the apex of Ghana’s Judiciary.
The ceremony was attended by high-ranking government officials, including the Vice President, members of the Council of State, the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, the leadership of Parliament, and the full complement of Supreme Court Justices. A distinguished legal scholar, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie began his education at the University of Ghana School of Law, before earning a Master of Laws in Constitutional Theory from Oxford University. His academic foundation has been matched by decades of practical experience on the bench. He was appointed to the High Court in 1993, elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2005, and appointed to the Supreme Court in 2012. During his tenure on the Supreme Court, he authored 87 majority opinions, with notable contributions in areas such as land ownership disputes, constitutional interpretation, and electoral petitions.
Observers note that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie brings to the Chief Justice role a reputation for scholarship, impartiality, and decisiveness.
