Ghana’s parliamentary minority is accusing businessman Ibrahim Mahama, brother of President John Dramani Mahama, of exerting undue influence over the country’s mining sector.
The opposition claims that Ibrahim Mahama has been appointing individuals with ties to his companies to key positions in institutions such as GIADEC, the Minerals Commission, and the Ghana Gold Board.
The Minority alleges that these appointments, combined with Engineers and Planners’ bid to take over the Damang gold mine, demonstrate a “dangerous drift towards state capture”.
The Damang mine, previously operated by Gold Fields, is set to be handed over to a local operator on April 18, 2026. Engineers and Planners, Ibrahim Mahama’s company, is among three shortlisted bidders, alongside BCM International and Vortex Resources.
The opposition is calling for a full investigation into the alleged concentration of power and transparency in the mining sector.
A citizen rejoinder has challenged the Minority’s claims, describing them as “baseless” and lacking factual grounding.
