The Federal Government has introduced a new initiative aimed at recognising and rewarding outstanding academic work among students across Nigeria. The programme, known as the National Laureate Prize, is designed to encourage innovation, research excellence, and intellectual development in tertiary institutions.
Announced by the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, the prize will honour exceptional research projects from students in universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education. The initiative places strong emphasis on rewarding high-quality academic work, particularly theses produced at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.
According to the minister, the award comes with significant financial incentives. Winners will receive prizes ranging from N5 million to N20 million, with the highest-performing research project earning the top prize of N20 million.
“This prize is all about recognising academic brilliance and encouraging students to push their research to the next level,” he said.
The National Laureate Prize is also part of a broader effort by the government to improve the quality and credibility of academic records in Nigeria. It is closely linked to the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD), a digital platform established to store, verify, and manage academic data across institutions.
Through this system, students’ research work will be securely documented, making it easier to track originality and prevent issues such as certificate fraud or plagiarism. The government believes that by integrating the prize with this platform, it will not only reward excellence but also strengthen trust in Nigeria’s education system.
“This initiative is part of a larger plan to build a transparent, data driven and globally competitive education sector,” the minister added.
The first edition of the National Laureate Prize is expected to take place in November 2026.
Beyond recognition, the programme is expected to inspire students to focus more on impactful research that can contribute to national development. By placing financial value on academic excellence, the government hopes to shift attention from rote learning to innovation and problem-solving.
