Federal Government Seeks Broader Port Investment Push

The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to attract broader and long-term investment into Nigeria’s port sector, a move championed by the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr Abubakar Dantsoho. According to Dantsoho, the administration is committed to making the nation’s maritime infrastructure more attractive to investors, underlining that sustained capital inflows and strategic partnerships are essential to unlocking the full potential of the country’s seaports and catalysing economic growth.

Dantsoho, who leads the NPA, reaffirmed that government policy continues to support private sector participation and long-term financing arrangements that modernise port facilities and expand operational capacity. He noted that such investments would boost efficiency, enhance cargo handling capabilities, and position Nigerian ports as competitive gateways in the region. This push aligns with ongoing government priorities to bolster trade, improve logistics infrastructure, and deepen Nigeria’s integration into global commerce.

The call for increased investment comes amid a broader strategic agenda to diversify the economy away from oil dependence and strengthen the country’s non-oil export potential. Nigeria’s ports play a vital role in facilitating trade, and improvements in port infrastructure can significantly reduce costs for businesses, attract foreign direct investment, and stimulate domestic industries like manufacturing and agriculture.

Dantsoho’s remarks build on previous statements he made at international forums, such as the United Nations General Assembly, where he outlined plans for a globally competitive and digitally driven port system. These reforms include the rollout of a Port Community System (PCS), which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2026. The PCS aims to digitally connect stakeholders, streamline documentation and reduce operational delays across the maritime ecosystem.

Under Dantsoho’s leadership, the NPA has also emphasised investment in critical infrastructure across several key port complexes. Eastern ports such as Onne, Rivers, Calabar, and Warri are being repositioned to play a greater role in national trade flows through targeted improvements, dredging projects, and incentives to attract shippers and logistics firms. Private sector interest is rising, with expanded services and new vessel calls signalling renewed confidence in these facilities.

Stakeholders in the maritime industry have echoed the call for enhanced investment, stressing that modern port infrastructure and efficient operations are crucial to curbing cargo diversion, reducing bottlenecks, and ensuring that Nigeria retains its competitive standing in West Africa’s logistics market.

The government’s broader strategy also includes positioning Nigeria’s ports to benefit from continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which is expected to increase intra-African trade and elevate the importance of efficient port gateways in the region. By unlocking long-term capital and fostering an enabling environment for investors, the federal government hopes to transform the maritime sector into a key driver of sustainable growth.
