Dust Haze, Rainstorms to Blanket Nigeria for Three Days – NiMet Forecast

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert predicting dust haze, cloudiness, and isolated thunderstorms across Nigeria over the next three days, beginning Sunday and continuing through Tuesday. This forecast covers regions throughout the country and highlights conditions that may impact daily life, public health, and economic activity.

According to NiMet’s outlook released on Sunday from Abuja, dusty atmospheric conditions will persist over the northern and central parts of Nigeria, while coastal areas will experience varying cloud cover and thunderstorms. Authorities warn that the mix of dust and rain could affect travel, visibility, and air quality.

NiMet’s announcement comes as dust from the Sahara continues to influence the country’s weather patterns, carrying fine particles that reduce visibility and can aggravate respiratory problems, especially among individuals with underlying health issues such as asthma.

In the northern region, moderate dust haze is expected on both Monday and Tuesday, with the density of dust increasing by Wednesday. NiMet predicts that thick haze will remain widespread through all forecast hours on that day.

For the central states, similar dusty conditions are anticipated throughout the forecast period, ranging from moderate to thick haze. This consistent presence of suspended particles may reduce visibility on roads and require extra caution from drivers.

In the southern inland cities, moderate dust haze is also expected. Meanwhile, coastal areas are forecast to have clearer skies with sunshine interspersed with cloud patches and isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rain in states such as Lagos, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Delta later in the day.

This variation reflects the country’s diverse climatic influences, from dry Harmattan winds in the north to moist, unstable air from the Atlantic in the south which can produce thunderstorms even as dust hangs in the atmosphere.

NiMet has underscored that these weather conditions could significantly lower air quality in affected areas. Suspended dust particles increase the risk of respiratory difficulties and other health issues, particularly for vulnerable groups like children and the elderly. Citizens are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activities and take necessary protective measures where possible.

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, especially when dust and rain combine to reduce visibility on highways and city streets. Poor sightlines increase the risk of accidents and can strain emergency services already dealing with weather-related issues.

Airline operators are similarly advised to use airport-specific weather data from NiMet to plan flights and minimize weather-related disruptions at airports across the country.

Beyond immediate health and travel concerns, these weather patterns may cost Nigeria economically. Reduced visibility and hazardous conditions can slow transportation and logistics, disrupt agricultural activities such as crop drying, and increase healthcare spending due to respiratory illnesses, all of which can strain businesses and household budgets in an already challenging economic climate.

Weather experts encourage residents to follow NiMet updates regularly and heed all advisories. As Nigeria navigates this period of dust haze and thunderstorms, cooperation between communities, transport authorities, and health services will be vital in minimizing both human and economic impacts.
