Africa’s richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, is preparing to leave behind more than just a business empire. As part of his long-term succession plan, the billionaire has decided to dedicate one-third of his personal wealth to charitable causes, a move designed to ensure that his philanthropic work continues for generations.

The plan was revealed by his daughter, Halima Dangote, during an interview with Bloomberg. She explained that the decision has the full support of the family and has already been included in her father’s estate planning.

Based on estimates from the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote’s fortune currently stands at about $35.1 billion. If maintained at that level, one-third of his wealth would be worth approximately $11.7 billion, making it one of the largest charitable commitments ever announced by an African billionaire.

According to Halima, philanthropy has always been one of her father’s biggest priorities. She said he has carefully put structures in place to ensure the family’s charitable work remains active long after his lifetime.

She explained that the family places strong emphasis on improving healthcare and education, believing these sectors are essential to creating lasting social impact. She added that giving back to society has always been a core value of the Dangote family and one of the reasons behind the success of their businesses.

Halima also noted that the decision follows Islamic inheritance principles, under which up to one-third of a person’s estate can be allocated to charitable causes. She said the family officially endorsed the arrangement by signing the necessary documents, ensuring the donation becomes part of Dangote’s lasting legacy.

The billionaire’s charitable activities are already carried out through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which was established in 1994. Over the years, the foundation has grown into one of Africa’s largest private charitable organisations.

According to Halima, the foundation received an initial endowment of $1.25 billion around ten years ago and has since been strengthened with an additional $700 million in funding.

She explained that about 70 per cent of the foundation’s annual spending is invested in projects across Nigeria, while 20 per cent supports programmes in other African countries. The remaining funds are used for humanitarian initiatives in other parts of the world.

The foundation focuses on improving healthcare, expanding access to quality education, fighting malnutrition, and providing humanitarian assistance during emergencies. It has also worked alongside the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and several northern Nigerian state governments on major public health campaigns, including efforts that contributed to the eradication of wild poliovirus in Africa.

Dangote’s latest commitment comes at a time when wealthy individuals around the world are increasing their support for charitable causes. Although the planned donation is below the 50 per cent commitment associated with the global Giving Pledge, it remains one of the most significant philanthropic promises by any African entrepreneur.

Earlier this year, TIME magazine recognised Dangote’s humanitarian efforts by naming him among the world’s most influential philanthropists in its inaugural TIME100 Philanthropy list. The recognition highlighted the Aliko Dangote Foundation’s wide-ranging programmes, which invest more than ₦50 billion every year in health, education, nutrition and community development projects across Africa.

With this latest decision, Dangote is reinforcing a legacy that extends beyond business success, placing equal importance on creating opportunities and improving lives across the continent.
