Nollywood crime thriller Black Market has set a new Guinness World Records mark after 51,000 people watched the film at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos, on Saturday, September 26, 2026.
Guinness World Records confirmed the achievement after the screening, recognising 51,000 viewers as the qualifying attendance for the record. Channels Television reported on September 26, 2026, that the figure was based on viewers who remained at the screening from the beginning to the end of the film.
The qualifying figure was lower than the overall attendance announced by Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, who said 64,000 people attended the event. TheCable Lifestyle reported on September 27, 2026, that Guinness used the number of viewers who stayed throughout the screening to determine the official record figure.
The 51,000 viewers surpassed the previous record of 43,624, set in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines. TheCable Lifestyle reported that organisers had targeted 50,000 simultaneous viewers for the Lagos screening.
The event began with the opening of the gates at 2pm, followed by a red-carpet session at about 3pm. The main screening started at about 7pm, with music, food, games and other entertainment activities also held at the venue, according to Channels Television’s September 26, 2026 report.
FilmOne Entertainment, the film’s distributor, announced the achievement on its social media platforms on September 26, 2026, saying more than 51,000 people had gathered for the screening. The distributor identified Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios as the film’s production partners and Switch Visuals Production as the event organiser.
The record announcement was met with cheers, celebrations and fireworks at TBS, where thousands of movie lovers had gathered for the screening.
Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, produced by Nora Awolowo and Nicole Ofoegbu, and co-written by Gimsay and Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, Black Market follows five women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation whose lives are thrown into turmoil after the daughter of one of them is kidnapped.
The film stars Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Lateef Adedimeji, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Uzor Arukwe, according to TheCable Lifestyle’s September 27, 2027 report.
Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson were among the dignitaries at the event, alongside several Nollywood actors and filmmakers.
The achievement makes Black Market the holder of the Guinness World Records title for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location, according to reports following the September 26, 2026 screening.
