Apple Inc. has announced a major leadership change, naming John Ternus as its next chief executive officer. The move signals a new chapter for the company, which is currently valued at about $4 trillion.

Ternus will officially assume the CEO role on September 1, 2026, replacing Tim Cook, who will transition into the position of executive chairman. The company said the decision followed a long-term succession plan that was unanimously approved by its board.

The incoming CEO is not new to Apple. Ternus joined the company in 2001 and has spent more than two decades rising through the ranks. Over the years, he has played a key role in shaping Apple’s hardware division, overseeing the development of major products such as the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and AirPods.

Before his promotion, he served as senior vice president of hardware engineering, a role that placed him at the center of Apple’s product innovation strategy. His leadership has been closely tied to some of the company’s most successful hardware advancements, including its transition to in-house silicon chips and improvements in Mac performance.

Apple described the leadership change as part of a carefully planned transition, emphasizing stability and continuity. The company noted that Cook, who has led Apple since 2011, will remain actively involved in guiding the company in his new role. During his tenure, Apple grew significantly, expanding its market value from hundreds of billions to trillions of dollars while launching new product lines and services.

Ternus steps into the role at a critical time for the tech industry. Apple, like many of its competitors, is navigating rapid changes driven by artificial intelligence and evolving consumer demands. His experience as a product-focused engineer is expected to shape how the company approaches innovation in this new era.

Industry observers see his appointment as both a continuation of Apple’s internal leadership culture and a strategic move to maintain its dominance in hardware design. Known for his technical expertise and collaborative leadership style, Ternus is widely respected within the company.

With this transition, Apple is betting on a leader deeply rooted in its engineering culture to guide the company through its next phase of growth. The coming years will reveal how Ternus balances Apple’s strong hardware legacy with increasing pressure to compete in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
