The Senator representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, has declared that Nigeria’s economy is finally stabilizing under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking during a high-profile stakeholders’ meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Magodo, Lagos, the lawmaker presented a comprehensive stewardship report, linking national macroeconomic gains to tangible grassroots development.
Addressing a crowd of party leaders, elders, and executives, Senator Abiru described the Tinubu administration’s first few years as the “calm after the storm.” He argued that the bold, albeit difficult, decisions made since May 2023 were essential to prevent a total economic collapse. Key among these reforms were the removal of the petrol subsidy, the unification of foreign exchange rates, and significant fiscal and tax restructuring.
According to Abiru, these interventions are now yielding measurable results. He pointed to easing inflation—particularly in the food sector—greater transparency in the exchange rate, and a notable rise in external reserves. These factors, he noted, have been instrumental in restoring investor confidence and maintaining positive GDP growth, which in turn has boosted subnational revenues to ease pressure on local businesses.
As the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and other Financial Institutions, Abiru highlighted his legislative contributions as a pillar of his “Renewed Hope” agenda for Lagos East. His stewardship, built on the three pillars of Legislation, Empowerment, and Endowment, has seen the passage of landmark bills such as the Nigeria Insurance Reforms Act and the Copyrights Amendment Act. He is also actively driving amendments to the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) to further modernize Nigeria’s financial sector.
The senator’s report was not limited to policy; it detailed extensive physical and social interventions across the district. Abiru revealed that over 35 schools have benefited from classroom construction, while healthcare has been bolstered by the building and upgrading of 40-bed hospitals and primary health centers.
On the economic front, Abiru’s commitment to “grassroots economic inclusion” was evidenced by the N480 million grant provided to 48 cooperative societies last December. Additionally, over 2,000 constituents have received industrial tools—including generators, sewing machines, and ovens—to foster entrepreneurship, while 80,000 households have been reached through food pack schemes.
Beyond the numbers, Abiru stressed the importance of political organization. He urged APC leaders to mobilize residents for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) continuous voter registration and the party’s own e-registration exercise. He emphasized that “data-driven planning” is the only way to ensure long-term electoral success and sustainable governance.
Concluding the meeting, the Senator called for discipline and unity within the party, urging stakeholders to remain steadfast in their support for President Tinubu’s reforms. By aligning local stewardship with national policy, Abiru aims to ensure that the gains of the “Renewed Hope” agenda are felt in every corner of Lagos East.
