Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has praised the Nigerian Army’s 1 Division for its role in improving security across the state, describing its work as vital to peace and stability. He spoke warmly about the army’s efforts during the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) event held at the 2 Battalion Parade Ground, Ribadu Cantonment in Kaduna.

The governor’s comments were delivered on his behalf by his deputy, Dr Hadiza Balarabe. Mr Sani said WASA is an important tradition for the military, marking the end of a year of training and operations while also providing an opportunity for officers, soldiers, their families and civilians to come together and celebrate Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

He singled out the army’s performance over the past year as impressive, especially in tackling serious security challenges such as kidnapping, cattle rustling and armed banditry in Kaduna State. The governor said that the successes registered by the 1 Division had contributed directly to enhanced peace and safety across the region.

Mr Sani noted that the army’s work had been strengthened by close cooperation with other security agencies under Operation FANSAN YAMMA. He said joint efforts had played an important part in reducing crime and expanding secure spaces for residents.

He reassured the army that the Kaduna State government would continue to offer strong support in 2026. The governor urged military personnel to stay focused, uphold the highest standards of professionalism and remain resilient in the face of ongoing security challenges, stressing that their dedication to protecting lives and property is essential for lasting peace.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division, Major-General Abubakar Mohammed Wase, also spoke at the event. He said WASA remains a cherished annual occasion that not only showcases military tradition but also celebrates cultural diversity within the armed forces and the wider community. According to him, the event was planned to include a range of social, cultural, musical and regimental displays for all guests.

Maj-Gen Wase described the Division’s training and operational activities throughout 2025 as successful and carried out with professionalism, despite facing various challenges. He credited joint operations under Operation FANSAN YAMMA with significantly reducing security threats in the Division’s areas of responsibility, particularly in relation to banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling.

He added that WASA offered a chance for the public to gain a clearer appreciation of the many backgrounds and traditions represented by barracks communities, which he called a “melting pot” of cultures.

Maj-Gen Wase also honoured fallen soldiers who lost their lives defending Nigeria’s peace and unity. He prayed for their souls and offered condolences to their families, recognising their sacrifices as key to the progress made so far.

The celebration brought together senior military officers, government officials, traditional leaders and families of serving personnel. Attendees enjoyed cultural performances and other displays that highlighted the diversity and spirit of Nigeria.

Governor Uba Sani’s praise of the army reflects wider acknowledgement of improved security in Kaduna, a development that has been noted by military leaders and government officials in recent months.
