Aspen Pharmacare Sells Asia-Pacific Arm for $1.59B to Cut Debt and Refocus on Growth

Aspen Pharmacare, the largest pharmaceutical company in Africa, is making a major strategic shift by selling most of its Asia-Pacific operations to Australian private equity firm BGH Capital for a staggering $1.59 billion.

The deal came from an unsolicited offer that Aspen, led by billionaire Stephen Saad, decided was too compelling to pass up, prompting a more than 20% jump in its share price on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as investors signaled their approval.

The sale includes Aspen’s businesses in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines, which together accounted for 18% of the company’s revenue and 26% of its core profit last year.

This move is all about strengthening Aspen’s financial position and sharpening its focus after a tough year.

The company reported a significant annual loss, a sharp reversal from the previous year’s profit, partly due to disputes over mRNA product contracts.

By selling these assets, Aspen will raise a substantial amount of cash to pay down debt, lower its financing costs, and free up capital to double down on high-growth areas.

Specifically, the company is pivoting toward the booming market for GLP-1 drugs used to treat diabetes and obesity, including its partnership to market Eli Lilly’s popular drug, Mounjaro.

CEO Stephen Saad confirmed that the sale aligns with the company’s long-term goals and will provide greater flexibility as it navigates operational pressures and restructures its manufacturing facilities.
