Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on Nigerians to come together in support of true federalism so that everyone in the country is treated fairly and equally, regardless of their tribe or religion.

Makinde made the appeal in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, during his 58th birthday celebration and the launch of a book organised by a senior member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Ali Odefa.

He told the gathering that unity and a genuine federal system are essential for Nigeria to ensure that all citizens enjoy equal rights and opportunities. He said that Nigerians should not remain on the sidelines but should actively work towards achieving a federal arrangement that respects diversity and promotes fairness across the country.

Makinde used the occasion to praise the people of the South East for the warm reception he has received there, despite the region’s different ethnic and political backgrounds. He said their respect and goodwill show the positive effect of unity and mutual understanding.

According to him, the recognition and respect given to him in the South East underline what he called “the handshake across the Niger,” a reference to the symbol of unity and cooperation between different parts of Nigeria. He said this goodwill was part of what motivated his call for a stronger and fairer federal system.

Makinde explained that true federalism and unity in diversity would allow all Nigerians to enjoy equal treatment and opportunities, irrespective of where they come from or their religion. He urged people across the country to make their voices heard in support of this cause.

He also noted that the presence of Igbo people in all sectors of the nation’s life shows the importance of inclusivity and unity for national development. He encouraged the South East to continue striving for practical federalism that benefits all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or background.

At the event, Francis Nwifuru, governor of Ebonyi State, was represented by his deputy, Mrs Patricia Obila. She described the book, titled The Seyi Makinde Story, as informative and urged those present to buy a copy so they could benefit from its message.

Mrs Obila also praised Makinde’s achievements in Oyo State, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, education and health. She said that if more leaders had qualities like Makinde’s, the country would be in a much better place.

Chief Ali Odefa, who organised the book launch, spoke warmly of the governor. He described Makinde as a courageous leader and a close friend. Odefa said he admired Makinde so much that he had named one of his sons after him.

In closing, Makinde reiterated his belief that Nigerians must unite and work together for a federal system that guarantees fairness, equality and respect for all its diverse peoples.
